Knoxville's Market Square Farmers' Market:A Five Year Tradition (Give or Take 150 Years)
In its present incarnation, the Knoxville Market Square Farmer's Market is enjoying its 5th season of bringing the best locally-grown
food from the farm to your table. But, the tradition of farmers selling
their fruit, vegetables, artisanal foods, and locally-made crafts dates
back to the 1850s on Knoxville's historic Market Square.
The days of delivering fresh East Tennessee vegetables to market via
buckboard wagon have given way to local farmers bringing bushel baskets
in the back of pickup trucks and hybrid cars, but the spirit of celebrating
the role of local food in growing our sense of community is the same
now as it was 150 years ago.
Since the Market Square District Association helped launch the Farmers' Market in 2003, the market has helped revive downtown as a weekend
destination for local residents and visitors alike, and reintroduced
our taste buds to the pleasures of locally-grown food.
In just five short years, a Saturday shopping visit to the
Market Square Farmers' Market has become a local tradition. Most importantly, the
Market plays its own small role in rekindling much older traditions.
Heirloom varieties of fruit and vegetables, preserved for generations
by our region's farm families, can be found here to be enjoyed again.
Also, shopping at the market helps support the tradition of family
farming-- an important part of our local economy. And, finally,
purchases make their way to homes across the region where we hope they
have played a role in revitalizing the tradition of enjoying dinner
with family and friends.
Our web site here will help call attention to upcoming events
and specials at Knoxville's Market Square Farmers' Market. They will also keep you informed
of news relating to the support of local foods. And, like the market
itself, we hope to provide you with some entertainment, some
good-natured discussion, and a bit of a sense of community.
Feel free to stay a while and explore the site. Then, join us
downtown on Saturdays and Wednesdays to enjoy the tradition of the Market Square Farmers' Market.
